Whirlygiggle with No Trimming

Okay, I just saw Jodi's post about the Whirlygiggle. I was playing with the template yesterday and had the same dilemma. I must say, I was a bit upset. I wanted the template to use with charm squares, because I didn't want to trim the charm squares. Had I wanted to trim, I would have gotten the Omnigrid Windmill Template. Which is a perfectly FINE template! I just figured that we buy these charm squares because they are precut. I'd prefer to not do a lot more cutting to them - especially not cut off only half an inch. Cutting in half or another shape is a whole other story.

So, I decided to try to figure out what I could come up, and I figured out a way to use the Whirlygiggle template AND NOT TRIM!

**Edited to add: This works when you're using Jodi's template and 5" charm squares (which was my goal). It doesn't seem to work with other sizes.

Here's what you do:

For your white fabric (or fabric that is not the giggle fabric), cut a piece that is one inch bigger on one side than the original whirlygiggle piece. For instance, I was using charm squares that are 5x5, so I cut a piece of white fabric 5x6.

Now, you want to cut that piece of fabric. So, put your ruler next to the edge of the rectangle 1/2 inch (I can't think of good way to explain that, hopefully the picture helps). Then put the template next to the ruler and cut.

You can see how the giggle fabric is smaller than the white fabric.

Here's a better picture.

Sew the giggle fabric to the white fabric.

As you can see, after it is sewn, the squares are the same size.

Here is the sewing layout.

And here is the finished square! No trimming needed for a lazy time oriented gal like me!

Here's one I did yesterday with 4 blocks. Just to test this theory out further. The finished blocks are 9".

How fun, and how quick! Now, I might just need to convince Jodi to make another template so I don't have to use my ruler for that half inch. (Further evidence of my laziness.)

Michelle at greetingarts has the original block tutorial on her site. Thank you so much, Michelle, for the idea for this wonderful block - in all of its variations.

Also, since I did this post so quick, I might go back and edit it. I hate when I have typos and things not explained well.

The way I did it, which is SUPER super quick was to cut it all with the rotary cutter... I cut slight rectangles, ie 6" by 6 1/2"... this is from both the coloured fabric and the white fabric... then lay the rectangles down on my cutting mat. I then lined it up to cut my diagonals (which will be cut across the long side)... i just lay my cutting ruler across the block 2 1/2" inches in from either alternative side and sliced across the block (this makes the diagonal shape)... i was able to cut several blocks at a time like this without using a template at all... and because you have added the 1/2" the both blocks they end up a square with no trimming... i think i cut a whole quilt in under an hour! Hope this helps others (I don't have a blog to show you) but hopefully you can understand from my instructions!
Cheers
Amy

Interesting...I use a template...no "math" involved and it's great. Downfall...it only makes one size.

Love the last block you made.

Wow! Wish I had seen your post before making and trimming all 35 of mine. Next time I will know how to make them perfect. Thanks and keep up the great work.

That is so cool. I do like it too when you can use what you have rather than have to trim a bit off that wont be of much use afterwards. I dislike waste so what yo have shown is excellent.

Now I'm really depressed! I've spent the last 5 hours in my workroom playing with fabric - ignoring the phone - and the best I could come up with was a crazy heart block...then I come to your blog and you have REAL blocks! There's no justice! I love the ornament blocks and the bag and the whirlygigs...so cute! Now I'm going to drown my pain with a slice of lemon tart...then I'll come back to my workroom and try again...maybe whirlygigs are in my future! xo, Nan

Oh my goodness! I love this variation of the whirlygig block. I recently made dolly quilts using this block but I really like the look of the center-all color block.

Ooo! I love that whirllygig thing! I'm gonna have to find that template! I can just envision all of the scrappy quilts I could make!

Love your whirligiggles...for my templates I make a paper version use double-sided cello tape to attach it to the underside of my ruler, so I know exactly where to cut! I remove the paper when I'm done with the cutting. . .it works nicely for any size!

Those are so cute! You do such nice work, and with 3 kids! Goodness. I have 3 also, but I have not been able to do anything like what you do... not yet, that is.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! You're my hero! I was just contemplating this exact dilemma, because I'm using charm squares and didn't want to have to trim them!
